This series was first envisioned in 2014 when I found out that I had another AVM (artery/vein malformation) in my spinal cord that was inoperable. This AVM had irritated my spinal cord, causing it to become permanently swollen. If the swelling gets too bad, or the AVM starts bleeding, it could cause paralyzation or even death. Looking at the MRI's and CT scans of my spine, I found myself thinking about the fragility of the human body, and how one small anomaly can bring the entire body crashing down.
In this series I have painted anonymous female figures as if they are made of sand that is being slowly eroded to reveal the bone structure beneath. As the series progresses, each consecutive painting will show the figure in a further state of deterioration, until the only thing left is a pile of bones. It is my hope that this series expresses the pain and isolation of watching your body slowly disintegrate against your will.
This is an ongoing series that I continue to work on.
